SUMMER RESIDENT CAMP SEASON POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

Camp Dorothy Thomas, Camp Scoutcrest, Camp Wildwood


Each camp has a unique setting that enables us to provide general and specialized camp programs that will enhance Girl Scouting for each girl who attends. Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Resident Camps are accredited by the American Camping Association and comply with all local, state and federal regulations regarding resident camping. Each camp is directed by a qualified, trained camp director. We are seeking qualified, experienced individuals to work as specialized and general staff for the upcoming camp season.

Camp Dorothy Thomas has 4 cabin units, 3 bunk houses and a platform tent unit where campers live. Horseback riding is the largest program, with an 18-horse stable. Other facilities include an AAU approved swimming pool, multi-sports court, sports field, archery range, craft lodge, ropes course and nature hut. This camp has 220 acres of open and wooded area in Riverview, southeast of Hillsborough County.

Camp Scoutcrest is an aquatic camp. The 24 acre camp is located on Crescent Lake in Odessa, FL. Campers are housed in 2 cabin units and a platform tent unit. Programs offered include sailing, canoeing, swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking and fishing.

Camp Wildwood is a 589 acre equestrian and aquatic camp located on rolling hills northwest of Wildwood, FL. There are 4 units where campers live in either dormitory or cabin style lodging. Horseback riding, outdoor skills, cooking, environmental and swim programs are offered.

Job Positions and Brief Descriptions of Duties

These are resident (live-in) staff positions, which include food and lodging. Camp staff are given appropriate time off during and between sessions. Female staff are housed in quarters that are centrally located to the girls in their charge. Male staff are housed in separate quarters from all females. Camp staff must be flexible to reassignment throughout the summer. All staff undergo a criminal background screening and a substance abuse test. All Staff must be willing to subscribe to the Girl Scout Promise and Law and have knowledge of the Girl Scout program or be willing to learn. All camp positions require people who are team players, willing to accept other duties as assigned, able to withstand the extreme summer heat, and can get along with others in various settings. Assistant Camp/Program Director
21 years of age minimum. 4 year degree in related field preferred. Salary range: $300 – $400/ week. Requirements:

  • Experience in program planning in the camp setting.
  • Ability to supervise adults and children.
  • Must be creative and flexible.
  • Ability to administrate operation of camp in director’s absence.
  • Ability to cope and act wisely in emergency or crisis.

Business/Trading Post Manager
21 years of age minimum. Must keep organized records/documents. Must be efficient and accurate. Ability to supervise procedures.
Salary range: $200-300/week.

Counselor-in-Training Director
25 years of age recommended minimum. 4 year degree in education related field or experience teaching adolescents preferred. Must be creative, flexible, and sensitive to the needs of girls ages 14-17. Responsible for program planning for camp events and supervision of CITs.
Salary range: $225 – $325/week.

Arts & Crafts Director
21 years of age recommended minimum. 1 year experience directing an Arts and Craft program for children. Plan and provide creative exciting activities involving the Arts & Crafts.
Salary range: $225-300/week.

Cabin Counselor
18 years of age minimum. Experience working with children in a camp or recreation setting. Ability to supervise young adults and girls. Responsible for planning unit activities with girls, instructing activities, and supervision of campers’ daily activities and sleep time.
Salary range: $200 – $300/week.

Junior Counselor
16 years of age minimum and completion of Counselor-in-Training program at a Girl Scout Camp or other accredited camp. Responsible for assisting Counselors in the supervision of daily activities of campers. May be required to instruct activities.
Salary range: $100 – $175/week.

Camp Nurse
Possess a current Registered Nurse license. Oversee general health of all campers and staff.
Salary range: $300 – $600/week.

High Adventure and Waterfront Staff

In addition to certification in these specialties, high adventure and waterfront staff must hold current certification in First Aid and Infant, Child and Adult CPR from one of the following organizations: American Red Cross, National Safety Council, Emergency Medical Planning, Inc.

Director of Riding
25 years of age minimum. Formal, documented training in Western or English styles. Experience teaching riding progression to youth. Willing to adhere to all safety rules as set forth by GSUSA and CHA. Knowledge of horse care and stable maintenance.
Salary range: $250 – $350/week. (Camp Dorothy Thomas and Wildwood only)

Riding Instructor
18 years of age minimum. Formal, documented training in Western or English styles. Experience teaching riding progression to youth. Knowledge and experience in horse care and stable maintenance necessary.
Salary range: $200 – $300/week. (Camp Dorothy Thomas and Wildwood only)

Low/High Ropes Course Instructor
21 years of age minimum. Current instructor certification from a recognized organization in low and high ropes challenge course elements. Must be certified in First Aid and CPR.
Salary range: $200 – $300/week.

Archery Instructor
21 years of age recommended minimum. Currently certified or has documented experience indicating knowledge and skill teaching and supervising archery.
Salary range: $175 – 250/week.

Lifeguard
18 years of age minimum. Current lifeguard certification from a recognized sponsoring agency. Teaching/camping experience helpful. Salary range: $175 – $325/week.

Kayak, Sail and/or Canoe Instructor
18 years of age minimum. Current certification specific to craft required from recognized sponsoring agency. Experience in planning, instructing and evaluating in the area of specialty.
Salary range: $225 – $325/week. (Camp Scoutcrest only)

Water Skiing Instructor
18 years of age minimum. U.S. Water Skiing Association and Florida Safe Boating certifications required. Will instruct campers in water skiing, drive boat, and spot for skiers. Will also have responsibility for boat/equipment repair and maintenance.
Salary range: $300 – $400/week. (Camp Scoutcrest only)

Snow Ski Specialist
18 years of age minimum. Experienced snow ski and snowboard instructor. Will instruct campers in snow skiing and snowboarding on an artificial surface.
Salary range: $225 – $325/week. (Camp Dorothy Thomas only)

Food Service Staff

All Food Service Staff must be willing to complete training according to council standards.

Food Service Manager
21 years of age minimum. Current Professional Food Service Manager certification. Directs operation of kitchen, plans and prepares meals. Experience in menu planning and preparing for large groups (50-200). Responsible for meeting the nutritional needs of campers and staff. Ability to supervise others required.
Salary range: $275-$375/wk.

Camp Cook
18 years of age minimum. Experience in food preparation and kitchen operating procedures. Salary range: $200 – $300/week.
Dishwasher – 16 years of age minimum. Wash dishes, pots and pans. Help keep kitchen area clean. Help with preparation of meals.
Salary range: $100 – $200/week.
